At the 2017-18 school year marks one of the most successful in Original Science Research (OSR) history. This year, 35 seniors are graduating from the OSR program. Across multiple competitions, OSR students have taken home 33 awards and over $5,000 in prizes this year.

Westchester-Rockland Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS)

The first competition of the year in February, Mamaroneck students took home a plethora of awards across many different categories. In the Speaker competition, where students prepare PowerPoint Presentations of their work, Marina Tosi ‘18 won First Place in Behavioral Science and then competed with her speaker presentation at the upstate JSHS in Albany this past March. In the Competitive Posters competition, Srinjoy Goswami ‘18 won First Place in Medicine, Katherine LoBue ‘19 won First Place in Medicine, Abby Bennitt ‘19 won Second Place in Behavioral Science, Lauren Sigda ‘18 won Second Place in Biology, Eliza Grace Cattau ‘18 won Second Place in  Medicine, Sasha Sirota ‘18 won Second Place in Medicine, and Max Vicinelli ‘18 won Second Place in Neuroscience.

Westchester Science and Engineering Fair (WESEF)

In mid-march, 33 MHS students went to WESEF to compete against almost 600 students from all over Westchester County. 16 MHS students were recognized for their work. Susanna Weber ‘19 placed First in the Physics and Astronomy category as well as winning a Grand Prize: an all-expenses paid trip to present her research at the International Genius Olympiad at SUNY Oswego June 11-16. At Genius Olympiad, Susanna will compete against 1200 students from 75 countries and 39 states. Peter Simpson ‘18 placed Second in the Behavioral and Social Science category, Sam Brause ‘18 placed Third in the Computer Science category, Katherine LoBue ‘19 placed Third in the Medicine and Health Category, Pablo Garza ‘18 placed Third in the Physics and Astronomy category and Abby Bennitt ‘19 placed fourth in the Behavioral and Social Science Category. Other than placing within category, students can also win special awards sponsored by outside companies specifically highlighting achievements within different categories. From Mamaroneck High School, Zoe Krevlin ‘18 won the Cornell University Food Science Award, Chloe Weiser ‘18 won the Office of Naval Research Award, Simon Gerszberg ‘18 and Noah Patrick ‘18 won the Behavioral Science Research Award, Lizzy Kaplan ‘19 won the Mianus River Gorge Ecology Award, Tomas Grosmark ‘19 won the Innovations in Biological Sciences Research Award, Ali James ‘19 won the Society for In Vitro Medicine Award, Will Cook ‘19 won the Ricoh Sustainable Development Award and Rebecca Marcus ‘18 and Brian Pfeffer ‘19 both won the ASU Walton Sustainability Solutions Initiative Award.

All of the students who won awards at WESEF were recognized at a Larchmont Village Board meeting.

Acorda Scientific Excellence Award

The Acorda Scientific Excellence Award recognizes students from Westchester, Fairfield and Putnam counties for their achievements in science, all of whom are then interviewed by Lisa Wexler on WGCH Radio. MHS has had a lot of success with this award in the past and this year was no exception. Rebecca Marcus ‘18, Marina Tosi ‘18, David Hilden ‘18, Pablo Garza ‘18, Chloe Weiser ‘18, Sam Brause ‘18 and Rory McKemey ‘18 were all recognized during the 2017-18 school year.

Regeneron Science Talent Search

Marina Tosi ‘18 and Rebecca Marcus ‘18 both were named to the group of 300 scholars nationwide this year.

International Genius Olympiad

Susanna Weber ‘19 and Katherine LoBue ‘19 both are competing at the International Genius Olympiad, which will take place at SUNY Oswego from June 11-16.
