Boys Track Sets New Record in Relay

Records, as the common proverb says, are meant to be shattered. This past week, one of the fastest records at Mamaroneck High School was shattered. Sam Morton, Papa Diop, Jack Spiridellis, and Will Young (all ’17) set a brand new school record for the 4x800m relay. The 4x800m relay is the equivalent of 2 miles long, with each runner running two laps (or one half-mile) around the track. Averaging out at two 4:11.36 miles, the Tigers ran at a blistering pace.

The team had shattered the previous record of 8:42.18 by over 30 seconds, no small feat in this style of racing. The Tigers broke the record at the Mamaroneck Relays, surpassing the competition on the road to victory.

However, while the Boys’ 4×800 relay team has been successful, the track team as a whole has enjoyed a positive season with runners such as Eliana Safer (’18) winning the League Championship for the 2000m steeplechase and Jane Hollander (’19) winning the League in the 800m.

As Sectional races and potentially even State races come up for many track members this spring, the Tigers track team hopes to continue the early season successes.
