The Mamaroneck Varsity Football team has gotten off to a rough start. The Tigers, who have started the season 1-3, are showing more signs of repeating last year’s disappointing effort, a season in which they finished 2-7, rather than the success they experienced two years ago when they were 7-2. Asked what the Tigers’ early season struggles can be attributed to, Stuart Williamson ’17 said, “Football, more than any other sport, requires everything to work together like a machine. We’re not at the point yet where everyone is doing their job and piecing it together.”

After the first game, an exhilarating 14-13 win over White Plains, the team seemed to be headed in the right direction. However, the emotional high stopped there. Since the September 2nd opener, the Tigers have dropped three straight to Scarsdale, 7-6, Clarkstown North, 28-20, and New Rochelle, 34-0. O

ne bright spot for the team has been running back Daniel O’Rourke ’17, who has rushed for 540 yards and 4 touchdowns so far this season. “The offensive line,” O’Rourke said in regard to where his success derives from. “Guys like Eddie [Ciraco ’17] and Myson [Robinson ’17] blocking make my job easier.”

The Tigers will look for positive outcomes in the regular season’s final two games (October 1 vs. Mount Vernon and a Homecoming matchup with Suffern on October 7) before the playoffs arrive. Peter Solimine ’17 had this to say when asked about the team’s goals for the rest of the season: “We’re just going to keep going week by week and finish the regular season strong. If we can do that, we’ll secure a playoff berth. If we beat Mount Vernon and Suffern, we might have our first playoff game at home. But again, we’re just going to go one week at a time and work our way back to .500.”
