Grilled Cheesus! Awarding Larchmont’s Best Spots for the Classic Sandwich

Grilled cheese. Need we say more? The gooey American cheese sandwiched between two crisp, buttery, toasted slices of bread. Lucky for us, and for all of you, Larchmont and Mamaroneck have no shortage of our favorite sandwich. So we went around town to three Mamaroneck High School favorites: Nautilus Diner, East Ave Cafe, and Village Deli, stuffing ourselves with this amazing creation in search of the best grilled cheese. We ordered the same thing at each place: grilled American cheese on white bread. Here are our results in the inaugural installment of The Globe’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives:

The Nautilus Diner Location: 1240 Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck, NY 10543

Price: $5

The classic, homey diner just minutes from MHS with plush booths offers a comfortable dining experience for a late night snack, munchies during a block day free and everything in between. The service was the fastest here of all three places, and the sandwich was pure comfort food. Nautilus’s sandwich is satisfyingly crunchy yet maintains a terrific ratio of bread to cheese. And while the cheese was not completely melted, the lack of grease on our fingertips makes up for that. A classic treat.

Globe Awards: Fastest Service, Best Bread to Cheese Ratio

East Avenue Cafe Location: 2 East Ave., Larchmont, NY 10538

Price: $5

This mom-and-pop joint is most well-known for its iced coffee and endless array of candy, but its grilled cheese is certainly a standout as well as a usual order for many customers. The first bite was promising with little grease and crispy, golden-brown bread. The cheese was plentiful and the bread was thick, but small pieces of cheese stuck to our teeth and the crust was somewhat tough— more like a white Rye as opposed to plain white bread. Overall, the sandwich was bigger than the diner or the deli, and remains a great option for grilled-cheese lovers.

Globe Awards: Least Greasy, Best Bang for Your Buck

Village Deli Location: 1023 Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck, NY 10543

Price: $4

An MHS lunchtime favorite for classic deli sandwiches like bacon, egg and cheese, most customers order from the ample deli menu. Simple classics like grilled cheese are not as popular here, but the sandwich did not disappoint. Prepare to take it to go as the deli has no seating inside and few tables outside. At first sight, this grilled cheese had the best tan. Pulling the two halves apart, the hot gooey cheese stretched into an Instagramworthy moment. To top it off, the bread was seasoned, making this grilled cheese more nuanced than its competitors. The almost-liquid cheese balanced against the strong grease. This sandwich is for the more experienced grilled cheese eater, as it is a twist on the classic.
